Lumber Checking Explained
"Checking" refers to the cracks or splits that occur when lumber dries. Despite its initial appearance as a flaw, checking is actually quite beneficial in many ways.
  • Structural Integrity: Checks reveal how the wood has dried and adjusted, indicating that the lumber has settled into its natural state, making it less likely to warp further. This is particularly useful for projects requiring stable and durable wood.

  • Release Tension: Checking often begins on the exterior surface of lumber and gradually moves inward. As the outer layers dry and shrink – eventually allowing the process to reach the inner layers as well – it causes the lumber to shift and crack. In fact, because it releases the tension that has built up, checking actually makes the wood stronger.

  • Moisture Reduction: When wood checks, it releases internal moisture. This process makes the lumber more suitable for construction because lower moisture content reduces the risk of mold and decay.

  • Indicator of Drying Process: Checks show that the wood is adapting to its environment. They also signify progress when seasoning lumber and preparing it for long-term use. We want our lumber to last for many years, so checking is a great sign that it will.

  • Enhanced Rustic Aesthetic: For many projects checking adds a unique, aged aesthetic to the material which is highly desired. This natural appearance is prized in rustic or farmhouse-style designs because it shows that the wood is 100% real and has aged correctly.
Ultimately, checks are not a drawback — they are a natural feature of wood that should be appreciated and provide peace of mind as the lumber settles into maturity and lasting stability.

NOTE: While checking can occur in KDAT lumber such as Red Cedar and Treated Pine, it is far less common and less pronounced than in Rustic (Rough Cut) wood, and might not appear at all. Rough Cut lumber will almost certainly have deep, abundant checking.
