Our Pergolas are made of top quality, hand selected, #1 Grade lumber in either Treated Pine or Western Red Cedar. Both are resistant to insects, rot, and decay, and will last years - decades, without any finish applied.
As with any wood, over time it will turn gray, and small visible hairline checks may appear on the surface. This is normal. The changes are in no way structural, but only affect the appearance. Some folks like the gray, weathered wood and others do not. For those who do not and prefer to keep the fresh and new look, or to change colors, a clear sealer or quality stain should be applied annually.
We offer the initial stain application as an optional upgrade, but if you prefer you can apply a stain yourself. Painting is also an option, however due to Cedar's natural resistance to the elements it will resist paint. Be sure to check with a painting professional on the proper way to paint Cedar if you intend to paint your Cedar structure. Treated Pine can be painted with any high quality Exterior Latex Paint, and we recommend using Treated Pine Lumber if you do intend to paint your structure. Since we use KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment) Lumber, you can paint right away!
For a maintenance free material, consider upgrading to Vinyl available in different color options such as White or Almond.
