The spacing of your pergola’s top runners is an aesthetic choice, and does not affect the stability of your structure. However, the further apart your runners are spaced, the less shade your pergola will provide.
Choosing your runners to be spaced 12" on center will allow plenty of sunshine into your outdoor living space. One runner will be attached at the exact center of your pergola, and additional runners will be placed at 12" intervals on either side. Smaller spacing width will provide additional shade, but if even more shade is desired, consider adding a lattice top or retractable shade canopy.
Top Runner Sizes by Style:
- Vintage Classic - 2" x 2"
- Belvedere, Oasis, Arched - 2" x 4"
- Rough Cut - 3" x 6"
