SmartSide siding is a plywood-based panel siding with a tempered hardboard face. Though it looks a lot like T1-11, SmartSide has a smoother surface that looks natural, but resists moisture, dents, checks, and cracks. It holds paint exceptionally well. Therefore it only needs to be repainted every 7-10 years, depending on the quality of paint and local weather conditions.

In terms of longevity, SmartSide is equal to vinyl natural cedar siding, but offers a difference in style and appearance. Structures with SmartSide siding should last 20+ years, assuming you maintain it properly. Be sure to apply paint when needed, keep bushes, plants, grass, and weeds from growing up against the siding, and don't allow the ground to be back-filled against the siding either.
