Cedar Shake Shingles
Cedar roofs have a long tradition of quality, dating back hundreds of years. The heartwood accumulates natural oils which reduce wood rot and insect damage. It is also relatively straight grained, which means it can be manufactured into shingles that will remain flat and strong. Cedar roofs have been known to last over 70 years. To keep the wood's fresh appearance and weather-resistant properties, we recommend that you use a quality stain/sealer once a year. If left untreated, the wood's color will fade to gray over time, giving the roof a more rustic look without losing durability or integrity.

Cedar shingles are mounted on purlins, generally spaced 8” on center. The bottom of the shingles will be exposed because cedar shingles need to breathe. They expand and contract with temperature and absorb moisture then dry out again. If there were a solid roof deck beneath them, the moisture would be trapped and cause either the appearance of water damage, or actual water damage. Airflow under the shingles allows them to dry evenly from the top and bottom and prolongs the life of the lumber.

NOTE: Cedar shingle roofs ship with the shingles attached, except for the seams which are simple to install with common household tools.
