Structural Details for Sheds

It is important to recognize the major parts of a shed and how they work together. This will help you make informed decisions regarding options and customizations, which will help us build the perfect shed for you.

The individual sizes, shapes, and options we offer for each of these parts are sometimes different between structure types (and even between the same structures at different dimensions) but most standard features are shown on the shed below.

Shed Details
(Listed in Alphabetical Order)

Door The door(s) provides access to the interior of the shed. We offer single doors (shown above) in various styles and materials as well as double doors for an entrance with twice the width. Some door options also include windows for more visibility. We can also include additional doors to allow for more than one entrance.
Flooring The floor is a crucial element that directly effects the stability, interior temperature, aesthetic style, and other aspects of the shed. We often use LP Flooring (an engineered wood), Pressure Treated Wood Flooring or Untreated Wood Flooring, all of which are ideal for different uses. We can also build a shed without a floor but this will require additional precautions and requirements concerning the mounting pad or deck and the anchoring method needed.
Floor Joists These joists are responsible for supporting the floor of the shed. They can come in 2x4, 2x6, and 2x8 sizes that offer a range of strength for the reinforcements. While they are usually spaced at 16" On Center, they can also be spaced 12" On Center (4" closer together) for more stability and load-bearing potential.
Foundation Runners (Skids) Our sheds with floors include 4x4 foundation runners, also known as skids, which create a buffer between the floor and the base beneath the shed (gravel, pavers, concrete pad, or the ground). Foundation Runners must sit on a base that is level within 1-2 inches.

Note: These skids are not included with the 2x8 Floor Joist option since those joists are tall enough to act as their own buffer.
Roofing The roof is a huge contributor to the lifespan of the shed and the visual style expressed by the exterior of the structure. We offer 50-Year GAF Asphalt Shingles (shown above), ABM Metal Panels (exposed fastening hardware), and Standing Seam Metal Panels (protected/hidden fastening hardware) as our primary roofing choices, each with numerous color options for maximum personalization.
Roof Framing These beams and braces uphold the chosen roofing material and sheathing. They provide a reinforced canopy to ensure the roof can resist strong winds and heavy snow loads.
Sheathing The sheathing is a protective layer beneath the Roofing and Siding materials that aid in expelling moisture and retaining a comfortable temperature inside the shed. The two materials we use are OSB Sheathing, which is engineered particle board with twice the strength of regular plywood, or LP Tech Shield Sheathing, which boasts high temperature reflection to keep the interior cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Siding Siding protects the exterior walls and contributes greatly to the visual style of the shed. We divide all of our sheds into two main categories based on the siding material:
  • SmartSide Siding is an engineered wood composite that looks like natural wood but is significantly more durable and resistant to rot, insects, and the elements.
  • Vinyl Siding is a superior plastic that is frequently used for both residential and commercial buildings around the world. It is stratch and crack resistant, moisture repellant, and has exceptional color retention.
Wall Framing A straightforward but extremely important component, the Wall Framing supports the wall siding and sheathing materials, as well as the entire roof of the structure. With a level floor and/or base beneath them, the framing posts can remain aligned for decades, bringing stability and strength to the whole shed even while avoiding certain features like doors and windows.
Window These openings are a must on any enclosed structure. Windows allow light to access the interior of the shed, and also provide visibility in and out of the structure. We install windows with one of several framing options on the outside of the walls such as a clean and simple vinyl trim (the perfect fixture for an eye-catching accent color) or shutters on either side of the window that can be made in a handful of different styles to suit your personal taste.
