Sizing Details: Gazebos

We offer numerous gazebo sizes that we refer to as standard sizes but we are also well-versed in building highly custom sizes and designs. With either route, some specifics are important to consider when deciding what size is best for you according to the intended use of the structure and the space it must cooperate with. While we make the assembly of your structure much easier, it is essential to use the correct dimensions during the planning phase, especially when your structure will inhabit a confined area.

Measurements can usually be done yourself with a tape measure, or perhaps a local contractor can be of assistance. We can also help by reviewing photos sent to us of the mounting locations to request particular measurements that could prove useful in the design process and to provide our opinion of the area, such as how to avoid potential issues. This review is particularly important for any wall-mounted structures.

If the location of your structure has plenty of room around it, measurements are less crucial, but be sure to pick a size that will provide enough space to accommodate any intended use that comes to mind.

General Measurements
Nearly all of our gazebos are measured nominally by the roof dimensions from one flat side to the opposite and parallel flat side: flat to flat, not corner to corner, is the prevalent industry standard. Other measurements will reside within the area of the roof by various amounts depending on what options are desired such as upgraded post size, increased overhang depth, and others. Just for an example, the usual roof overhang for a gazebo with a deck is roughly 6 inches with default options.

Concerning our Ramadas, also known as Open Rectangle Gazebos, a larger variety of possible customizations can adjust the overall roof size (such as steeper pitch angles with our Gable Roof style) so the standard sizes we offer are listed by the dimensions of the floor or deck. However, if a floor/deck is not purchased, our rule of thumb is to place the center of the corner posts roughly 1 foot inside the edge of the roof’s area.

Example Engineered Drawings

We offer several types of drawings through our CAD department that show the floor layout, post locations, or elevations showing heights, or even engineered stamped drawings (additional charges apply). Our experienced design staff can also quote architectural drawings to address some larger projects.

For any non-standard sizes or other customizations, we highly recommend adding drawings to help eliminate issues down the road and to give you peace of mind while completing site preparation.

If precise dimensions are needed, your project will require Spec Drawings.

What Size is Right for Me?
Not sure what size is best? It can be a challenge to make the vision in your head a reality on your property, but we’re here to help. Consider this chart to get you close, it shows common intended uses for our gazebos and our suggested size (minimums, from experience) for that activity:

Intended Use Suggested Sizes
Reading Nook, 2 Occupants 8’ minimum with chairs, 10’ with couch
Dining Table, 4 Occupants 10’ minimum with stools, 14’ with chairs
Entertainment Room, 6 Occupants 14’ or larger without furniture, 18’ with furniture
Party Hosting, 10 Occupants 20’ minimum without furniture, 26’ with furniture
Large Gathering, 14+ Occupants 26’ minimum without chairs, 32’ with chairs
Public Hall or Theater, 20+ Occupants 32’ minimum, custom size/shape recommended

Hopefully this gives you a good idea of where to start when picking the right size. Remember, measurements are for the outside of the structure, not the area inside it which may be reduced by posts, railings, walls, doors, windows, and other features that can take up space.

Consider our Drawings, Compare Materials, or Site Preparation pages as your next steps in planning the perfect project.
